Activities to show the importance of plants

In order to celebrate the Fascination of Plants Day (May 18), PUCRS will be offering a series of activities involving both the Institute for the Environment (IMA) and the Museum of Science and Technology (MCT-PUCRS). The program includes a photography exhibition, a tour around campus, a visit to the Museum’s Herbarium and the Minute of Science.

From May 18 – 26, there will be an exhibit of Pró-Mata’s fascinating plants, featuring images and information on the native plants of the Pró-Mata Center for Research and Nature Preservation ,at the Irmão José Otão Main Library, in celebration of the Center’s 21st anniversary in 2017. Pines, Peruvian berry bushes, begonias and helosis brasiliensis are some of the plants that will be in the exhibit.

A Tour Around Campus will be offered on May 18, as some of the fascinating plants found around campus will be shown. The tour starts at 3 PM and is expected to last 1h30min, departing from the Solidarity Square (by building 15). All the plants that will be shown will have their scientific names printed on plates and come with a QR Code directing to the event’s website. If you are interested, send us an email to [email protected] and inform us your name and telephone number by May 17. There are limited seats.

The MCT team will be delivering presentations on the different aspects of these organisms, from May 16-19, from 3 to 3:30 PM, and from May 17-19, from 11 to 11:30 AM, at the Museum’s exhibit area. On May 22, at 4 PM, you will have the chance to visit the Museum’s Herbarium, which is home to a collection of plants with more than 21,000 specimens. Click here to check the MCT’s schedule.

The Fascination Plants Day is celebrated by universities, institutes, botanical gardens, museums, farmers and companies all over the world. This edition is coordinated by the European Plant Science Organization (EPSO). The idea is to show the role of plants in environmental preservation, agriculture and sustainable food production.
