PUCRS will be at a higher level of internationalization in the first semester of 2020. This is because it has opened its doors to 41 international students who chose our University for their academic mobility program, and 7 other students enrolled in the Programa de Estudantes-Convênio de Graduação (PEC-G), a cooperation program run by the Ministry of Education of Brazil, which is geared towards the promotion of education in developing countries. The group includes students from 16 countries: Germany, Benin, Bolivia, Canada, Colombia, South Korea, Ecuador, Spain, United States, France, Ghana, Italy, United Kingdom, Republic of Congo, Mexico and East Timor.

On Mar 2 and 3, the incoming students joined the Orientation Seminar, promoted by the Office for International Cooperation. The program included academic orientation, a tour of the Campus, a tour of Porto Alegre, activities with Buddy Program partners and a welcome reception.

Students will be enrolled in programs in the 7 Academic Schools and are expected to join integration activities over the course of the semester. Students who are interested in welcoming international students in the next semester, can apply for the Buddy Program. Registrations begin in April.

Dorcas Kitoko, from the Democratic Republic of Congo, will begin her Law School program this semester. A PEC-G fellow, the student will be staying in Brazil for four years. She is excited about the beginning of classes. “I am very shy, but I am very excited for all that time I will spend here in Brazil”, she comments.

Medical school student from Universidad Católica Boliviana San Pablo, Bolivia, Nicolas Toledo Ribera came to PUCRS for a final internship. The doctor-to-be will be interning at the São Lucas Hospital and chose Porto Alegre as a destination after a recommendation from his home university itself, which is also Catholic.

Italian students Elisabetta Gherri e Sevil Chetulyan will start their second semester at PUCRS, in support of the double degree program between PUCRS’ Law School and the Università Degli Studi di Parma. They will be enrolled in 7 courses in 2020/1. Italian student Ludovico Giraudo, also from Parma, arrives for his period of academic mobility in the Food Science and Innovation program. “I love the city and the Campus is very beautiful. I’m excited for the beginning of classes”, he adds.
