The Dean of International Affairs, Heloísa Orsi Koch Delgado, and Project Analyst, Regina dos Santos Alegre Martins, represented PUCRS at the Nafsa 2017 Annual Conference & Expo, the world’s largest association dedicated to internationalization of higher education. The event occurred from May 28 to Jun 2, in Los Angeles, with the theme “Expanding Community, Strengthening Connections”.

The meeting brought together professionals from more than 100 countries to discuss and explore new directions in the internationalization of higher education. “To join an event of this magnitude enables us to learn about the international actions that have been carried out in teaching programs geared towards academic mobility, in the implementation of potential institutional collaborations, in the strengthening of educational policies and in the congregation of highly experienced multicultural professionals in the field of internationalization. Knowing all that will get us to revisit our actions with an eye to the continuous development of services we provide for the University’s internal and external community”, says Heloísa.

During the event, PUCRS had the chance to meet with partner institutions from Latin America (Pontificia Universidad Católica Argentina and Instituto Universitario de Ciencias de la Salud – Fundación H. A. Barceló) Europe (University of Bonn; UAS7 and St Mary’s University – Twickenham) and North America (San Diego State University; University of South Florida; KPU and Université de Montreal). It was also possible to get in contact with important international agencies, such as QS Rankings Intelligence Unit; Housing Anywhere; Organização Universitária Interamericana (OUI), Conference of the Americas on International Education (CAIE) and Education USA. “During this conference, we were able to meet with institutions from several countries as it brings together all members of the international community that are devoted to it. This is one of its highlights because institutions are able to set up and strengthen their international partnerships without the constant need to travel overseas”, comments Regina.

The conference was an opportunity to set up partnerships with non-partner institutions, such as University of California San Diego; California State University – Los Angeles; University of California Berkeley; University of Bamberg; St. Georges’s University of Grenada; China Higher Education Student International (the only institution selected by the Ministry of Education of China to offer special services to students).
