Jan-Werner Müller, Political Science Professor at Princeton University (USA), and political scientist Wolfgang Merkel, from WZB Berlin Social Science Center and Humboldt-University Berlin, came to PUCRS on Mar 21 to deliver the conference Populismo como desafio para a democracia (Populism as a challenge for democracy). The event was promoted by the Center for European and German Studies  (CDEA) and discussed the future of democracy and the State of Law.

Michael Westland, from the Embassy of the German Federal Republic in Brasília, made his presence felt, too. The lectures were mediated by the Dean of the School of Humanities and Deputy Director of CDEA, Dr Draiton Gonzaga and Professor Dr Hermílio dos Santos.

The guests discussed the concept of populism and how this trend has spread like wildfire in different countries all over the world. The event was supported by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the German Federal Republic through the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD).
