In October, professor and researcher from the School of Health and Life Sciences Fernanda Bueno Marrone went on a work mission in Germany, through PUCRS’s CAPES-PrInt Program (PUCRS-PrInt). The professor went to Eberhard Karls Universität Tübingen (Uni-Tubingen) to present the program, promote the regulations for foreign students and researchers, and prospect new projects in partnership with the Baden-Württemberg Center for Brazil and Latin America (Central Brazil, Latin America and Germany), from the German university.

Currently, the center is managed by professor Stefan Laufer and has already welcomed over 30 Brazilians in its laboratory. In addition, the professor has been to PUCRS several times, where he held seminars in Graduate Programs and organized Brazil-Germany events. Laufer performs in the industry and is an expert in drug research and development, as well as being a permanent member of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences, which allowed for several research projects to be done in collaboration with professor Fernanda.

In her work mission, the PUCRS professor had the opportunity to take part in the event Tag Pharmacia – Pharmacy Day, which took place in the Pharmaceutical Institute at the Uni-Tubingen. She also visited the research lab coordinated by professor Laufer, which includes several techniques that allow a broad experimental approach to synthesizing and standardizing new inhibitory molecules of kinase protein, in addition to methodologies. On this occasion, they discussed new projects, results and the professorships offered by Uni-Tubingen.

Fernanda also worked in the laboratory with professor Maria Goettert, from Uni-Tubingen, where they analyzed the results of the project Antiviral and anti-inflammatory properties of Skepinone-L: a potential pharmacological treatment for COVID-19. At another time, work meetings and debates were held in the Brazil-Germany center to proceed with two articles related to the collaborative projects

Em outro momento, foram realizadas discussões e reuniões de trabalho no Centro Brasil-Alemanha para dar andamento em dois artigos relacionados aos projetos em colaboração Efeito da modulação farmacológica da CD73 e da p38 na reposta dos gliomas à radioterapia and Antiviral and anti-inflammatory properties of Skepinone-L: a potential pharmacological treatment for COVID-19.

Partnership between PUCRS and Universität Tubingen

The partnership with Universität Tübingen exists since 1983, a cooperation that enabled the creation of the Pró-Mata Center for Research and Nature Conservation (CPCN), founded officially in 1996. In this relationship, in 2021, professor Fernanda co-advised Diana Koch, Pharmacy student from the Universität Tubingen. In addition, the professor presented papers in Brazil-Germany events in 2017, 2018, 2019. Currently, there is an ongoing project in collaboration with researcher Laufer, supported by FAPERGS and CAPES, focused on studying new molecules related to MAPK inhibitors in cancer.

In 2019, professor Fernanda and doctorate student from the Graduate Program in Cellular and Molecular Biology Fernanda Cruz took part in the event 9th Brazil-Germany Symposium on Sustainable Development: Integrating Systems for Sustainable Development – Linking Human and Natural Components, which took place in Stuttgart, Germany, at the University of Hohenheim, in 2019.

More recently, initiatives have stood out like professor Laufer’s participation in the Pharmacological and Toxicological Bases in Therapy course, taught by Fernanda, in 2021, entitled Drug discovery: the experience of the Tübingen Center for Academic Drug Discovery. In addition, virtual seminars were held to discuss results with the participation of researchers Laufer and Marcia Goettert from the Universität Tübingen, Fernanda Morrone from PUCRS and Luis Fernando Saraiva, from the University of Vale do Taquari (Univates).
