In addition to meetings with PUCRS professors and students, Rui Dang delivered the conference Do welfare dependent neighbors matter for individual welfare dependency? at the School of Business. The researcher presented data on how the neighborhood where a child is raised can influence their individual success and opportunities. “Children who move to areas with low poverty rates while young do much better as adults,” he said.

According to figures presented by Dang, 30% of the individuals who move to more developed areas achieve higher earnings, 27% are more likely to attend college and 30% are less likely to become single parents. In addition, the researcher called attention to the importance of using big data in solving social and economic problems, considering an opportunity in the development of smart cities.
