Genesis and alteration of Aptian pre-salt deposits in the Santos Basin.

Project presentation:
The Pre-salt Aptian reservoirs are characterized by recurrent precipitation of magnesian clays (mainly stevensite), and fascicular calcite crusts with primary and secondary porosity, interspersed with laminated deposits with calcite spherulites and secondary porosity resulting from the dissolution of clays, such as also with reworked intervals of intraclasts of these constituents. Despite the huge volume of reserves and the excellent productivity of these reservoirs, their depositional and diagenetic processes are still poorly understood.
The objective of the project is the development of depositional and diagenetic models of the pre-salt carbonate deposits of the Santos Basin based on the integration of data generated by the petrographic characterization of details of these rocks with geochemistry and isotopes. These models will allow a better understanding of the origin and diagenetic evolution of the carbonate deposits that constitute one of the largest reservoirs in the world’s basins.
