The IPR

People, infrastructure and excellence connected to reach solutions.

Our history

Created in 2014, the Institute of Petroleum and Natural Resources (IPR) aims to promote, give visibility and provide the sustained growth of the university’s actions in research, development and innovation in the areas of petroleum and derivatives, natural resources, energy and environment. The IPR represents the consolidation and expansion of the Center of Excellence in Research and Innovation in Petroleum, Mineral Resources and Carbon Storage (Cepac), inaugurated in 2007.

The IPR seeks to become an important reference center for the development of projects, services and products with excellence, relevance and quality, meeting the demands of a society in constant transformation and with increasingly complex challenges. The activities developed aim to position the IPR as one of the most important international reference institutes in technical quality in research, laboratory analysis and production of certified reference materials by 2026, guided by internationally recognized accreditation and quality processes.

The institute structure 5000 m2 of built-up area at PUCRS’ Science and Technology Park (Tecnopuc). This structure consists of a 7-storey building (96) with the first four floors dedicated to high-complexity laboratories and the other three including researchers’ rooms and administrative infrastructure. The IPR includes the Chemical Analysis Laboratory (LAQ), the Rock Characterization Laboratory (LCR), the Geochemistry and Petrophysics Laboratory (LGP), the Isotopes and Geochronology Laboratory (LIG), the Environmental Monitoring and Biotechnology Laboratory (LMA) and the Low Carbon and Hydrogen Technology Laboratory (LBC).

As a key element of the institute, a multidisciplinary team of professors, researchers, laboratory assistants, administrative professionals and undergraduate and graduate students at PUCRS develops activities of excellence, ensuring that analytical results, produced with rigor and quality, are transformed into strategic information and elements grounding the decision-making process of the partners of this Institute.
