Marcia Cristina Bernardes Barbosa has a BA, MA and PhD in Physics from Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS). She is a CNPq fellow, a Full Professor at UFRGS and director of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences. She has experience in the area of Physics and works mainly on water and its anomalies and aqueous solutions.

For her work with dynamic water anomalies, she won the Loreal and UNESCO Prize for Women in Physical Sciences and the Claudia Prize in Science in 2013. Marcia Cristina has also been working on gender issues in science. In 2009, she won the Nicholson Medal given by the American Physical Society. Additionally, for her work in graduate school, she received the Anísio Teixeira Award by Capes.
