Professor Isabela Fernandes Andrade

Architecture
UFPEL

Isabela Andrade is an Architect and Urban Planner, with a Master’s and Ph.D. in Architecture and Urbanism, and specialization in Sustainable Architectural and Urban Environmental Rehabilitation. She develops projects aimed at addressing the complexity involved in adapting historical buildings for accessibility. Additionally, she mentors projects related to accessibility, universal design, wayfinding, and ergonomics.

Her interest in this research area stemmed from her observation that physical spaces are not planned to meet the needs of people throughout their lives (children, adults, pregnant women, the elderly), and even less so for those with disabilities or temporary limitations. Furthermore, Isabela had a personal experience at home with a brother who had cancer and lost mobility during his treatment. This experience made her realize the lack of spatial conditions that would allow for his autonomy and independence.

Throughout her academic career, Isabela has received awards and recognition for her research, such as 1st place in the Civil Engineering category at the 6th and 8th National Exhibition of Education, Science, and Technology (Mostrarob) – IFSul (2017 and 2019). From 2017 to 2021, she served as the Director of the Engineering Center at the Federal University of Pelotas (UFPel), and currently, Isabela is the Rector of UFPel (2021-2025).

Isabela believes that the presence of women in various fields of knowledge is crucial, especially due to the sensitivity they bring to different themes and the empathy associated with the development of their projects.
