Interpersonal violence is a serious public health issue in Latin America. The consequences of exposure to violence bring about high social and individual costs, which affect both the physical and mental health, including Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) among other trauma-and-stressor-related disorders.

The understanding and treatment of the effects of exposure to violence will require interdisciplinary efforts and a translational approach. The lectures that will be delivered at this event will provide invaluable insights into how basic research can contribute to the improvement of therapeutic interventions in clinical practice, and advancements in mental public health can be made by taking the recent PTSD figures and evidence-based interventions into consideration.

Join ISTSS Meeting – Brazil 2017 “Urban Violence and Trauma in Developing Countries: Basic Research, Clinical Interventions, and Public Health” in order to discuss the recent advances on violence and trauma with experts specialist and researchers.

Cognitive-Behavioral Interventions for Trauma Related Disorders

Presenter: Prof. Ulrich Schnyder, MD, Zurich, Switzerland

Psychiatrist, Professor of Psychiatry and Pscyhotherapy, Head – Department of Psychiatry and Psychotherapy – University Hospital/Zurich, Past President of the International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies – ISTSS (2009/2010), Past President of the European Society for Traumatic Stress Studies – ESTSS (1999/2001). Prof. Schnyder has authored several papers and chapters on psychotherapy for PTSD and trauma related disorders and is the editor of recent books, including Evidence Based Treatments for Trauma-Related Psychological Disorders: A Practical Guide for Clinicians (Springer, 2015) and Evidence-Based Treatments for Trauma Related Disorders in Children and Adolescents (Springer, 2017).

Trauma-focused CBT is currently accepted as the first-line treatment for trauma related psychological disorders such as posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). In this workshop a number of empirically supported psychotherapies for PTSD will be presented: Skills Training in Affective and Interpersonal Regulation (STAIR) Narrative Therapy (Marylène Cloitre), Cognitive Therapy for PTSD (Anke Ehlers), Narrative Exposure Therapy (Thomas Elbert), Prolonged Exposure Therapy (Edna Foa), Brief Eclectic Psychotherapy for PTSD (Berthold Gersons), Cognitive Processing Therapy (Patricia Resick), and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing Therapy (Francine Shapiro). Differences and commonalities of these therapeutic approaches will be summarized and discussed. Participants will be invited to share the clinical challenges they are confronted with when treating trauma survivors. Core common elements such as psychoeducation, imaginal exposure, cognitive processing and restructuring, and meaning making, will be demonstrated and trained in small group work.
