School of Humanities professor and researcher, Dr. Roberto Pich, went on a mission to University of Bonn, Germany, on PrInt (CAPES-PrInt) from Sept to Oct, 2021. Pich has been developing several projects and research together with the German institution for more than two decades. His work has resulted in an institutional cooperation between PUCRS and the University of Bonn since 2013.

Institutional agenda at University of Bonn

Dr. Roberto Pich, affiliated to the Graduate Programs of Philosophy and Theology at PUCRS, serves as the Senior Ambassador for the University of Bonn in Brazil, under the institution’s Ambassador Program. During his mission in Germany, he developed a number of activities. At first, he introduced the university’s professor Dr. Michael Schulz and his PhD students to the PrInt Program, specifically the area of World in Motion – Migrations.

After that, he had a meeting at the Office of the Vice President for International Affairs and the International Office of the University of Bonn, to discuss other issues. These include the possibilities of double degrees in Master’s dissertations and PhD theses, under the PrInt Program. The parties also discussed the possibility of nominating new ambassadors of the University of Bonn in Brazil and Latin America; the 2022 calendar; institutional visits and the increased participation of PUCRS researchers in the University of Bonn’s Excellence Clusters.

The meeting was also attended by Dr. Stephan Conermann, coordinator of the Excellence Cluster Beyond Slavery and Freedom, at the Bonn Center for Dependency and Slavery Studies (BCDSS). The parties also discussed Conermann’s visit to Brazil, on the PrInt program; the application of Brazilian PhD student to BCDSS, in Bonn, and the perspectives of joint publications with Dr. Pich and Dr. Conermann.

In addition to these meetings, the professor attended two main lectures and enjoyed the University’s Central Library to finish his articles. “The agenda allowed us to consolidate academic cooperation between the countries and to strengthen ties between PUCRS and the University of Bonn”, Roberto Pich highlights.

Moving forward with the partnership

The visit made it possible for the institutions to think up new projects, as new advances in the partnership between the universities are expected. According to Pich, the possibility of designing a mobility program within an International Graduate Program at PUCRS is on the horizon. The program would address studies on forced migrations, especially on black and indigenous slavery, in three approaches with high potential for innovation: slavery in the history of European and Latin American philosophy; religion, Catholicism and slavery in colonial and imperial Brazil and law and slavery in Brazil.

“This may allow for the mobility of faculty and students as well as the promotion of research, graduate studies and postdoctoral research”, Roberto Pich adds.
