I INTERNATIONAL WORKSHOP ON INCLUSIVE EDUCATION: “Inclusion in the classroom – from rhetoric to reality”. November 24 – 25, 2016, PUCRS

The Graduate Program in Education of PUCRS, and more specifically, the members of the Line of Research in “People and Education”, CEES (Higher Education Study Center) and NEPAPI (Nucleus for Studies and Research on Learning and Inclusive Processes), in partnership with St Mary’s University, from London, are bringing the “I International Workshop on Inclusive Education”, whose specific area of interest will be: “Inclusion in the classroom – from rhetoric to reality”.

The United Kingdom relies on about 40 years of experience in the process of inclusion of disabled students into the educational system. The cornerstone of this experience was the Warnock Report, published in 1978, following four years of studies on the educational process of disabled students in that country, under the supervision of Helen Mary Warnock. This report, which gave birth to a number of acts, called for the application of the educational paradigm in detriment of the medical one and stressed the extreme importance of the integration of disabled kids in schools, as well as measures that would assist them in overcoming their difficulties. This report was also responsible for the introduction of the concept of Special Educational Needs which includes, in addition to disabled students, those who have learning disabilities. This report has been recently revised by its author and several inconsistencies and problems that still can be found in the educational system have been spotted.
