Drilling probe in Porto Batista (Triunfo/RS)
In June 2009, Cepac initiated a pilot project to recover coal bed methane (coal bed methane – CBM) and advanced methane recovery through the injection of carbon in the coal bed (enhanced coal bed methane – ECBM). The project is located in Porto Batista (municipality of Triunfo/RS), in the Charqueadas deposit.
At this site, the coal is approximately 320m deep. The first well has already been drilled and characterized, and will be used for the injection of CO2 (the injection of 100 tons is projected). A second well is being drilled, at a distance of 20m from the first, and will be used for the production of methane. This project is a pioneer in Latin America and one of the few in the world to assess the potential for recovery of methane from coal and the storage capacity of CO2 in this environment.
