On Dec 4, 89 undergraduate students attended the pre-departure orientation session offered by the Academic Mobility team. They have been selected for a one-semester mobility program in one of the 112 institutions that are partners with PUCRS.

At the meeting, they received orientation about the host university, life in a different country and other academic issues. Tatiane Froelich, a psychologist from the Center for Psychosocial Attention (CAP), talked to the group about the challenges and benefits of the experience of living overseas. “A mobility program is a process that arouses many emotions. Because of that, I would suggest they try to find balance. Don’t forget that you are in a different country but you are not alone”, warned she.

For 2019, most students choose Portugal as a destination. Other destinations include Germany, Argentina, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Spain, USA, France, Italy, Japan, Mexico, UK, Sweden and Uruguay.

Exploring different cultures

Carlos Eduardo Ferreira, a Business Administration major from the Business School, now has the chance to do an academic mobility program, through the Santander Universidades scholarship program. The student, who is on a scholarship at PUCRS, is heading to the Universidad Católica del Uruguay and is looking forward to learning about different cultures. “I also want to find out more about businesses in the country and take this opportunity to learn more”, comments he.

Law School  student Marina Dias Ferro, chose the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid for a mobility program. The possibility to transfer credits from overseas will give her the chance to stay in the same group she was admitted in when she returns. “I’m very excited because I want to learn about the culture, improve the language skills and enjoy everything the university has to offer”, completes she.

Journalism student Luísa Santos Soares, from the School of Communications, Arts and Design is heading to Northeastern Illinois University in 2019. “I’ve always felt I wanted to take a step further, learn and try out something new. Mobility programs will give me this chance”, celebrates she. As she came into contact with other PUCRS students who did a mobility program in Chicago, Luísa got very excited to find out about the new study methods.

New opportunities for 2019

Application for new mobility programs are expected to be opened from Dec 2018 to Feb 2019. PUCRS students will be waived from tuition and other fees at the host institution. They will also have their credits transferred to their curriculum when they return.
