PUCRS has, once again, made its presence felt in the Times Higher Education World Ranking 2022, as one of the best universities in the world. In addition to appearing on the global list, the University ranked among the 10th top public and private universities in Brazil, and the best private HEI in the south of Brazil. Academic production and knowledge transfer with other institutions are main reasons for this recognition. This edition features more than 1,600 universities from 99 different countries. The current publication reflects the figures and records from 2019.

This is the fifth time the University is recognized in international rankings in 2021 alone. In addition to this ranking, put together by British magazine Times Higher Education (THE), PUCRS appears in the rankings QS World University Rankings 2022 and QS Latin America Ranking 2022 published by THE British organization Quacquarelli Symonds (QS). In the Times Higher Education (THE) Latin America 2021, published in June, the University stands out among the most influential universities in Latin America and the Caribbean.

Excellence criteria

The survey published on Wednesday (1) takes five criteria into consideration: teaching – the learning environment (reputation survey, institutional income, staff-to-student ratio, doctorate-to-bachelor’s ratio and doctorates awarded-to-academic staff ratio); research – volume, income reputation (reputation survey, research productivity and research income); citations (research influence); international outlook – staff, students and research (proportion of international students, proportion of international staff and international collaboration) and industry income – knowledge transfer.

PUCRS’ highest individual score was in Industry Income (knowledge transfer). As for the final score, Citations is worth mentioning. This indicator is relevant, as it shows the quality and relevance of the academic production at the University.

For the President, Br. Evilázio Teixeira, the publication shows how much the University can manage knowledge management skillfully. The relevance of PUCRS and of other universities, in general, must be considered in view of what society expects from institutions and what they actually accomplish. For the new ways of thinking and conceiving a new institutional character become

action, universities need alliances and collaboration with several instances and actors. The fact that we are listed in another ranking shows that we have built and strengthened a solid bridge between research, impact and innovation for society, as we keep the excellence of our academic production.”
