School of Technology professor, Dr Ricardo Papaléo, went to the University of Groningen, in the Netherlands, under the Institutional Project of Internationalization (PUCRS-PrInt). During his visit abroad, the professor participated in several visits and meetings in order to further strengthen the cooperation efforts between the universities, especially in the area of nanomaterials.

In the Netherlands, Papaléo visited Groningen’s Center for Advanced Radiation Technology (KVI-CART), to know the facilities and set up for cell irradiations. He also went to the Zernike Institute for Advanced Materials, associated with the Faculty of Sciences and Engineering. Then, he visited the labs of researcher Thomas Schlathölter, who specializes in electronic spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, and low-energy ion accelerator. He also visited the facilities of Groningen’s NanoLab.

The mission also served for him to learn more about the Radiation Oncology department (UMCG) and the facilities of the new proton beam radiotherapy center. In conversation with researcher Stefan Both, chief proton therapy physicist, he introduced him to PUCRS-PrInt. They also discussed the possibility to expand the cooperation efforts between PUCRS and the Dutch university on the use of nanomaterials in radiotherapy and radiology.

“We also discussed the possibility to develop a cooperation project on nanoparticle radiosensitization and the possibility to send PhD students from PUCRS’ Graduate Program in Materials Engineering and Technology for a doctoral internship”, Papaléo adds. He is doing research under the cooperation project Development of technologies and innovative processes in health, which is coordinated by Dr Maria Martha Campos.
