Representatives of University of Haifa were invited by Center for European and German Studies

Professors Eli Salzberger and Fannia Oz-Salzberger, from University of Haifa (Israel), came to PUCRS for the 2nd Annual Conference of the Center for European and German Studies (CDEA), at the Law School. The visitors represent the Haifa Centre for German and European Studies (HCGES). The center is a “counterpart” of CDEA, which is based at PUCRS in partnership with UFGRS, and is sponsored by the Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst (DAAD). The Porto Alegre center is directed by Dr Claudia Lima Marques and Draiton Gonzaga de Souza.
Eli Salzberger, Law School Professor and former Dean of the University, delivered the lecture The surprising history of the legal institutions in Israel who became the guardians of Liberal Democracy. On the other hand, Fania Oz-Salberger, History Professor and writer, talked about the Isaiah Berlin’s Political Philosophy: Moderate Nationhood versus Fanatical Nationalism. The seminar was organized by the Dean of the School of Humanities, Dr Draiton Gonzaga de Souza, by the coordinator of the Law School’s Graduate Program, Dr Ingo Sarlet and by Professor Dr Alexandre Guilherme.
The professors were welcomed at the Office for International Cooperation, where they had the chance to learn more about PUCRS. Dr Alex Guilherme, who went to the University of Haifa in 2017, claims that having the visitors was a means to strengthen the ties with other DAAD centers and establish new cooperation activities.
“Initiatives like this open the doors in relevant institutions, such as the University of Haifa. Besides, the professors who came here this time are widely acclaimed in their areas. They visit several institutions from all over the world, and we learned a lot from them”, added Guilherme. New activities are expected to be developed in 2019, involving PUCRS and the Israeli university.
