In the book Awakenings, Oliver Sacks chronicles the story of a medical scientist who helps patients who had been victims of the encephalitis lethargica epidemic. He prescribed L-DOPA, a drug that is now widely used to treat Parkinson’s disease, and managed to “awake them.” They emerged from that catatonic state and awoke to life again. The book is about science giving hope to these patients. At the Brain Institute of RS, we experience new awakenings and moments of hope. We open up for the things that we learn and the new possibilities for the future and rekindle our hopes for new discoveries and possible cures. We want to share our scholarship with our community. BraIns takes pride in meeting the expectations of its community and its commitment to develop scholarship and make discoveries that ease the suffering of patients.
