2019_08_07_guilherme_pimentel_printSchool of Technology professor Dr Guilherme Araújo Pimentel went on a mission abroad at the Université de Mons (UMONS), Belgium, under the Institutional Project of Internationalization – PUCRS-PrInt. He is working on the international research project Technology, energy and natural resources: new paths to sustainability, coordinated by Prof. Dr Eduardo Cassel, under the priority theme Technology and Biodiversity: Sustainability, Energy and the Environment.

The purpose of the mission was to introduce the faculty of the Belgian University to PUCRS-PrInt and to share the findings of the collaborative activities between the Automation and System Control Group (GACS-PUCRS) and Service d’Automatique/Research Center Biosys (UMONS). Both groups have a consolidated history of graduate-level international cooperation. During the mission, Professor Dr Alain Vande Wouwer, Head of UMONS Biosys Group, got an invitation to come to PUCRS next year as a Visiting Professor under the PrInt project.

Opportunity for development

During his stay in Belgium, Pimentel also attended the 9th Specialized Conference on Sustainable Viticulture, Winery Waste & Agro-industrial Wastewater Management, as one of the technical staff members and chair of a session. Pimentel is writing an article jointly with the Institute for Petroleum and Natural Resources of PUCRS. In addition to that, the preliminary findings of the research between GACS-PUCRS and the Service d’Automatique (UMONS) were shared in an effort to encourage the production of scientific articles to be published in international journals of impact in the areas of bioprocess identification and control. “This shows the importance of the partnership between PUCRS and UMONS, as the institutions have been working together in a number of areas (namely the School of Health Sciences and School of Technology)”, Pimentel says.

Pimentel also attended the summer course entitled From metabolic flow analysis to biological process control: a digestion with worked examples and real-life applications. The course was offered in collaboration between UMons, Katholieke Universiteit Leuven (KUL) and Université Catholique de Louvain (UCL).
