Introduction

Marçal Jose Rodrigues Pires is a Chemical Engineer (UFRGS-1988), Master in Metallurgical and Materials Engineering (PPGE3M / UFRGS-1990, CAPES 7) and Doctor of Atmospheric Chemistry from École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL, Switzerland-1995). He holds a postdoctoral degree in Environmental Analytical Chemistry (IQ / USP- 1996-1997) and in Bioplastic-Zeolite Compound (Université de Mons, Belgium, 2013). Since 1998, he has been an Associate Professor at the PUCRS School of Sciences, where he teaches at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels. He is the principal researcher at the Laboratory of Analytical Chemistry of the Environment, a research group leader and researcher at CNPq (PQ 2). Advisor and co-coordinator of 32 master's dissertations and 8 doctoral theses and 3 post-doctoral supervisors. Prof. Marçal has been developing studies in the following areas: a) Trace Analysis and Environmental Chemistry, b) Atmospheric Chemistry, c) Environmental aspects of the use and processing of coal; and d) Synthesis of adsorbents from waste and their use in the treatment of liquid and gaseous effluents. He has coordinated and participated in several research and development projects financed by development agencies and companies.
