The coordinator of the project Technology, energy and natural resources: new paths to sustainability  Dr Eduardo Cassel went on a mission abroad in April. He joined a number of activities in Spain and Portugal in support of PUCRS-PrInt (Call 02/2019 – Work Missions Abroad). During his stay overseas, the joined the 17th European Meeting on Supercritical Fluids (EMSF 2019) and the 7th European Meeting on High Pressure Technology at Ciudad Real. He also paid a visit to the Institute of Agrarian Sciences  (ICA) of the Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (CSIC), in Madrid, and to Universidade Nova de Lisboa, in the Portuguese capital.

Cooperation between PUCRS and ICA

Cassel is embraced by the priority theme Technology and Biodiversity: Sustainability, Energy and the Environment. In his view, the mission made it possible for PUCRS to reinforce its interest in cooperating with CSIC. The center is considered the largest research facility in Spain as it specializes in all academic areas. It has a number of institutes in all states within the Spanish territory. Today, the only institute within CSIC that PUCRS has an agreement with is ICA.

In his visit to ICA, new research strategies and human resource training in the area of biopesticides have been developed. “We’ve been cooperated since 2011 with research groups at PUCRS and the Spanish institution ”, he says.

Joint initiatives with Universidade de Nova Lisboa

In addition to that, his mission in Portugal sought to materialize the partnership in the area of deep eutectic solvents. “Over a year ago, we began the initial talks and the initial papers on this area. In this mission we defined concrete research actions and human resource development activities to be undertaken for the coming four years”, he adds. The Laboratory of Unit Operations (LOPE) at the School of Technology will begin working on this new area.

He also connected with stakeholders at the university in order to allow PUCRS graduate students to study at the Portuguese institution and to allow PUCRS to welcome visiting professors in an effort to provide support in the implementation of the new technology at the University.
