Denise Cantarelli Machado went to Italy on PUCRS-PrInt
School of Medicine Professor, Dr Denise Cantarelli Machado, went on an Institutional Project of Internationalization (PUCRS-PrInt) mission at the University of Milan, in Italy. Denise was welcomed by Professor Maurizio Popoli, with whom she already has a consolidated research partnership.
The cooperation agreement signed in 2018 between the two institutions kicked off with the efforts of the Director of the Institute of Geriatrics and Gerontology of PUCRS (IGG), Dr Newton Luiz Terra. The PUCRS researcher has invited Maurizio Popoli to visit the Porto Alegre institution on three different occasions.
The scholars have been developing joint studies into aging, especially behavior and stress. They are also expected to work on the genetic profile of older adults, in partnership with Professor Popoli’s research group.
During her stay in Italy, Denise visited the Italian professor’s laboratory and checked upon the progress of the research carried out by doctoral student Fernando da Costa Xavier, from the Graduate Program in Medicine and Health Sciences, who is on a PUCRS-PrInt doctoral internship. In addition, Carina Zuppa, PhD in Biomedical Gerontology, who was advised Machado, had the opportunity to spend a year working at the laboratories of the Milanese institution from 2017 to 2018.
In Milan, Denise introduced PUCRS-PrInt and its opportunities to the professors of the Department of Pharmacology and Biomolecular Sciences. Machado, on behalf of PUCRS, was invited to join a new study carried out by Professor Paulo Magni’s research group, as he is expected to PUCRS in Jul 2020. “The mission not only allowed us to make progress on ongoing projects, but also allowed us to start new investigations on different areas”, she celebrates. The mission was developed under the cooperation project Studies on aging neuropsychology and molecular mechanisms associated with neurodegenerative diseases in the elderly population, coordinated by Professor Carla Schwanke.
