Introduction

The Professional Master’s degree in Pharmaceutical Biotechnology (MPBF) is intended to produce qualified human resources to operate in the areas of pharmacy and biotechnology. Prospective Masters will be capable of mastering methodologies dealing with the identification, characterization and validation of macromolecular targets for the development of drugs and performance of in vitro and in vivo diagnostic tests. Besides, students are encouraged to develop mechanisms of interaction between different research institutions and between the institutions and the productive sector aiming at the development of important products and processes within the national socioeconomic context.

Today, Brazil is highly dependent on the importation of raw materials for the production of drugs, biopharmaceuticals and other systems intended for laboratory diagnosis. This brings a significant deficit to the balance of trade in the health care area, thus making the development of this sector strategic for the country.

Hence, the availability of trained and qualified professionals, capable of developing innovative processes and seeking to establish closer ties with the productive sector is essential for such development and may contribute to the strengthening of this sector. It is in this scenario of challenges/opportunities that the Professional Master’s degree in Pharmaceutical Biotechnology of PUCRS plays a major role, thus allowing training and qualification of professionals to work with the development of products and process of highly added value for the pharmaceutical and diagnostic sectors
