Undergraduate Studies

PUCRS offers undergraduate programs in various areas of knowledge, with qualified professors and a complete infrastructure, with laboratories that stimulate and reinforce learning. These programs promote the human and professional development of our students, cultivating solidarity and an entrepreneurial spirit.

The programs offered by PUCRS at undergraduate level are:

Accounting

To follow are some of the areas these professionals are eligible to work: managerial accounting; internal/external auditing; controllership; court and extra court investigation; financial, tributary, tax and fiscal consultancy; public accounting and governmental finances; budgetary planning; and economic and financial costs and analysis. The program is intended to develop a corporate, financial and strategic view in students in order to meet the ever growing needs of users of accounting information. Accountants will be responsible for the project, design and maintenance of the integrated system of operational, financial, accounting and budgetary information of a company.

Advertising

Advertisers develop activities in publicity and advertising agencies, with service providers for graphic, electronic and digital means, as well as communication and marketing departments of companies, in general. These professionals must blend creative and marketing abilities in order to seek market-related information, plan concepts, spot adequate means, create messages and produce communication materials.

Aeronautical Sciences

In civil aviation, professionals are eligible to work as airline pilots – airplanes, commercial pilots and flight instructors, and are able to work as managers of airline companies as well as independent consultants in the area of flight security, training, flight operation and Flight Standard.

Architecture and Urbanism

Architects may work independently or either in private or public companies or institutions, organizing the physical space where people can live, travel, work, cultivate their body and spirit, in view of the utilitarian, technical, formal and historical-aesthetic aspects. They are also responsible for assessing, preserving and enhancing heritage sites and protecting the nature.

Audiovisual Production

This program is intended to produce professionals capable of working in different areas related to the processes of content production for the main audiovisual means, including cinema, television, video and internet. Audiovisual Production Technologists deal with the creation, designing and management of audiovisual projects and operation of image and sound equipment (cameras, lighting, recorders, microphones, editors) in analog or digital environments.

Biological Sciences

Graduates from the Biological Sciences program are scientists engaged in studying human life as well as animals, plants, fungi, microorganisms, including their origin, evolution and interactions. They can work in public companies or agencies, as researchers, analysts, inspectors, supervisors, advisors and service providers in the areas of natural resources, conservation, environmental preservation, biodiversity, biotechnology, genetic engineering, environmental impact analysis or in human health, pathological diagnosis, collective health, sanitation, pest control, among others. Graduates will be eligible to teach Sciences and Biology, in general, as well as Health and the Environment in Elementary, Middle and High Schools.

Biomedicine

The Biomedicine program is intended to produce biomedical scientists capable of conducting clinical, cytological, hematological, molecular, bromatological, environmental analysis as well as production and analysis of bioderivates, bioengineering actions, aesthetic biomedicine and image analysis, based on ethical principles and on the understanding of social, cultural and economic reality of their field, focusing on the transformation of reality on behalf of society. Therefore, it will produce generalist and humanist professionals to work in all levels of attention to health care, thus enabling them to present competences, abilities and know-how, within the perspectives and contemporary approaches employed by Biomedical scientists.

The program will address theoretical and practical insights in order to develop professional abilities that enable students to work autonomously and be committed to professional development. In addition to that, it will play a role in health promotion, protection and rehabilitation at both the individual and collective levels.

In accordance with the principles of the University and, in view of a comprehensive training, students will be encouraged to take part in activities fostering the improvement of quality of life and health of individuals, in view of the ethical dimension and the human principles of inclusion.

Business Administration: Business Administration

To follow are the areas the program will address: the concept of quality and the importance of its application; strategic issues involving businesses; stock market and options; supply chain management; development of innovation and environmental awareness; project management and design; the Brazilian model of public management. The program equips students to analyze organizations critically and take actions proactively.

Business Administration: Entrepreneurship and Succession

The program will provide students with the necessary insights, abilities and attitudes for the implementation of their own businesses or for the career of internal entrepreneur in well-established companies. They are required to understand the dynamics of family businesses and of the elements that facilitate or impede the process of family succession, in order to carry on with the business.

Business Administration: Foreign Trade

Students are expected to develop and expand businesses in external markets, work with international suppliers, understand and build adequate logistics to international operations, conduct international financial operations and develop strategies for the internationalization of businesses. The program equips students to manage companies that operate, or want to operate, in global markets.

Business Administration: Marketing

Students will be expected to manage marketing activities in companies, thus spotting market opportunities and thinking up market plans. They will be expected to identify and understand consumer behavior, manage products and brands as well as their importance to a company’s image. Students will be able to design market preservation strategies and create competitive advantages, as well as implement and control business performances.

Business Administration: Technology and Information Management

Students are expected to plan and implement the application of Information Technology resources in organizational activities, by analyzing how the different processes can be supported, re-designed and improved with the support of IT, maximizing quality, the satisfaction of the parties involved and the return on investments. The program will equip students for a systemic understanding of the relationship between technological, organizational and human aspects.

Chemical Engineering

Chemical engineers work in industries (mining, cellulose, petrochemical, food, metal mechanical, leather-footwear), as well as education and research. To follow are some areas they can embrace: development of new techniques for the production of new raw materials; development of the processes of transformation, quality control, environmental protection and management; projects in industrial and equipment installations; production management, technical sales, industrial consultations as well as control and automation of processes.

Chemistry

Graduates from the Teaching degree in Chemistry are eligible to work as teachers in private, municipal, state and federal High Schools. Students may pursue a double-degree in Industrial Chemistry.

Chemistry: Industrial Chemistry

Industrial chemists work in food, beverage, rubber, waxes, cements and ceramics, oils and fats, perfume, cleaning products, textile and fibers as well as paint and coating industries; additionally, they are eligible to work in environmental control, water disinfection, metallurgy and petrochemistry. They are eligible to conduct chemical analysis and quality control in research centers and public agencies, do technical sales, provide consultancy services, conduct research and development of new products, aiming to production and inspection.

Civil Engineering

Civil Engineers are professionals who make use of logical reasoning to work in the areas of Civil Construction, Sanitation, Highways, Structures, Transports, Foundations and Earthworks. They can become liberal professionals by setting up their own businesses or work for public or private companies. Consultancy work, project and execution of construction works, investigations, technical reports, scientific and technological research as well as management are activities they are expected to perform.

Computer Engineering

This program is offered through a partnership between the Schools of Engineering (FENG) and Computer Science (FACIN). The Undergraduate Program in Computer Engineering is intended to produce professionals to work in automation processes, combining insights related to the development and management of hardware and software projects. Such insights involve embedded systems, real-time systems, hardware and software integrated systems, distributed systems, computer networks and communication systems.

The creation and implementation of the Computer Engineering program can be justified for the increasing level of automatization and informatization in the modern society, which has paved the way for this new area of operation, called Computer Engineering in the most prestigious universities of the planet. The need for professionals capable of addressing computer demands at a lower level (hardware) dynamically, which was something that had normally been done by graduates from the Electrical Engineering program, who relied on increased awareness of the needs and trends of computational demands at a higher level (software), which was something that had normally been done by graduates from the Computer Science program, has given rise to the implementation and increasing market demand for professionals in this new area.

Computer Science

The program provides comprehensive training in Computer Science as it equips its students to work as system developers, researchers, software designers, technology consultants, managers in technology companies and future entrepreneurs. The program includes not only the fundamentals of Information Technology but also its major areas of operation, practical applications and technological trends that are constantly revisited.

Control and Automation Engineering

The Control and Automation Engineers (or Mechatronic Engineer) can carry out activities in private or public companies or even independently, in the conception, project design, fabrication, production of maintenance of devices, machines, automatic and robot systems. They can work in the most diverse industries in need of professionals with a solid understanding of precision mechanics, electronics, information technology, control and automation.

Creative Writing

Graduates from this program can work as fictional writers, editors, proofreaders, agents, supervising editors or screenwriters, in different genres and languages, by making use of conventional or digital means (books, periodicals, illustrations, internet, social media, podcasts, text and image editors) on their behalf in creative activities.

Dentistry

Dentists are responsible for preventing, diagnosing and conducting oral and dental treatment; manage private and collective clinic services. They are eligible to work in public or private institutions, in military institutions, municipal governments, trade unions, associations and schools, among others.

Design: Communication

By relying on teaching, research and extension, PUCRS’ Undergraduate degree in Design is intended to produce creative professionals in order to meet the demands of society in view of its economic, historical, cultural, technological and environmental context. The primary goal is to produce professionals for the market instead of only teachers and researchers.

Design: Product

By relying on teaching, research and extension, PUCRS’ Undergraduate degree in Design is intended to produce creative professionals in order to meet the demands of society in view of its economic, historical, cultural, technological and environmental context. The primary goal is to develop professionals for the market instead of only teachers and researchers.

Electrical Engineering

The Electrical Engineering program is intended to produce professionals capable of embracing activities related to the conception, project design, development, implementation, testing and maintenance of products and processes based on software and/or hardware, in both the public and private sectors of society. To follow are some of the areas the graduates are expected to embrace: electronics, microelectronics, telecommunications and information technologies, as well as electro-electronic systems. Graduates will perform their activities either in industries (electro electronics, petrochemical, metallurgical, automobile, telecommunications, nano and microelectronic components, among others) or services (consultancy companies, evaluations, investigations, inspections, etc.), and may conduct teaching and research activities.

Economics

The program addresses the importance of understanding the rapid changes in contemporary world economy, as well as in the Brazilian economy. The program is multi-faceted as professionals can work in companies, banks, public sectors, conduct consultancy work, auditing, arbitration, advising and technical investigations as well as teaching/research. They can conduct studies of economic and financial viability for companies and projects, design reports and budgets, market studies, financial and property assessments, funding projects as well as micro and macro-economic analyses.

Food Science and Innovation

The Bachelor of Food Science and Innovation (C&IA) works in the several stages of food supply chains. Recognized by Forbes magazine as one of the highest-paying professions of the future, the art of creating new flavors, textures and technologies for innovative foods will enable professionals to work in traditional industries too. Bachelors of Food Science and Innovation may work as consultants by providing support to companies seeking market repositioning in the food sector.

Gastronomy

PUCRS’ Gastronomy Program is intended to produce creative and entrepreneurial professionals, capable of implementing cooking techniques in view of individual and collective well-being, equipped with socio-environmental responsibility and valuing regional culture. Such professionals will rely on technical expertise and scientific fundamentals in order to take part and lead teams, as well as plan, organize, execute and manage food services, in line with the market trends and technological innovations in the area of gastronomy.

Geography

Graduates from the Teaching degree in Geography are eligible to work as Elementary, Middle or High School teachers in public and/or private schools. Graduates from the Bachelor’s Degree in Geography are eligible to work with research, consultancy and planning. They can work as liberal professionals, in technical areas or in consultancy and advising companies; they can conduct activities related to the environment, physical spaces, cartography, hydrography and tourism, in both urban and rural areas.

History

This professional are eligible to work as Elementary, Middle or High School teachers as well as in museums and historical archives. They can also provide advisory services to production, for media purposes; facilitate integration in cultural and entertainment programs; and participation in projects of public and private institutions for the ​​preservation of historical and cultural heritage.

Hotel Management

Hotel Management Technologists are eligible to work as managers in hotels, resorts and other means of accommodation, in several areas, such as lodging, reception, reservations, foods and beverages, marketing, event organization, among others. They are also eligible to work in hospitals, ships, clubs, restaurants and bars, leisure and entertainment companies and in other organizations in need of hospitality services.

Information Systems

Graduates from this program will be able to address work in evaluation, research, development, management and use of information technologies applied to the administrative and industrial sectors of public and private organizations. They are eligible to work as systems analysis, database administrators, information systems project managers, consultant/auditor in information systems development, systems programmer and IT manager, seeking integrative solutions (software, hardware, intranet, and internet) for the challenges posed by informatization in the different companies’ departments.

Journalism

Journalists work in printed or digital means of communication, such as newspapers, magazines, radio, television and internet (online journalism); in press offices; service providers, such as audio and video companies; in education and research as well as in the provision of services for public and private organizations.

Language Arts: English

Graduates from the Teaching Degree in Language Arts – English are eligible to work in Elementary, Middle and High School teachers, as well as in language institutes, teaching languages and literature. Additionally, they are eligible to work as translators, editors, publishers and researchers; language, expression and communication advisors; as well as writers, essay writers, literary researchers, literary archives organizers and reading development program organizers.

Language Arts: Portuguese

Graduates from the Teaching Degree in Language Arts – Portuguese are eligible to work in Elementary, Middle and High School teachers, as well as in language institutes, teaching languages and literature. Additionally, they are eligible to work as translators, editors, publishers and researchers; language, expression and communication advisors; as well as writers, essay writers, literary researchers, literary archives organizers and reading development program organizers.

Law

Graduates from this program are eligible to work as attorneys after passing the Brazilian Bar Exam. Additionally they may work in the public sector as: Judges, Public Prosecutors, Public Defender’s Office, Police Officers (Federal, Military Police Officers, Chief Police Delegates, Agents, etc.), among other things, as long as they meet the requirements of the profession. As well as that, they may work in several corporate organizations, trade unions, associations and NGOs.

Mathematics

The Teaching Degree in Mathematics is intended to produce Mathematics teachers to teach in Elementary, Middle and High School, who rely on solid expertise in their area of expertise, and mastery of proper methodologies for teaching, as well as understanding of reality they will work in, in view of its cultural, political, religious and social aspects. This is intended for the development of professionals who rely on a critical view of mathematics, which enables them to develop research and put together programs and topics of teaching as well as to assess course books.

Mathematics: Corporate Mathematics

The Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics is to produce professionals who, relying on a solid training in mathematics, statistics, algorithms and computer programming, as well as notions of economics and business administration, are capable of working in public or private companies, developing research and addressing management and production problems. Graduates will be able to pursue continued education, conduct teamwork and will be able to take a critical view before new ideas and technologies, and to communicate, by establishing connections between this area and other areas of knowledge.

Mechanical Engineering

Mechanical Engineers design and develop engines and machines in general. Automobiles, tractors and harvesters, cooling and air conditioning equipment, heating systems, among other products, are some of the benefits brought to society by virtue of the actions carried out by them. Job prospects for mechanical engineers are very good, both in the private and in the public sector. They may work in industries, teach and conduct research, conduct technical and economic viability studies, arrange visits, evaluations, design technical reports among many other things that the market can offer.

Medicine

Medical doctors promote health, at every level, in communities, with emphasis on the prevention of diseases; they will conduct remedial actions, of growing complexity, at hospitals equipped with advanced biomedical technology; they deal with rehabilitation of clinical or surgical patients, aiming to health rehabilitation and re-integration in terms of labor and social activities.

Nursing

Nurses are eligible to work in public and/or private hospitals, outpatient care units, community health centers, companies, schools, children and elderly communities. As an independent nurse, he/she may work in nursing offices, clinics or health care companies. They will manage, prescribe and develop health care and educational activities, by employing intrinsic nursing methodologies. They may work with the professional training of nurses as well as develop and apply research geared towards people’s health, their profession and society.

Nutrition

Bachelors of Nutrition can work in public and/or private institutions, such as hospitals, industries, companies, hotels, schools, restaurants, clinics, medical offices, gyms, sports centers, research institutions, conducting individual or collective food orientation, in different evolutionary stages, with an eye to promoting a longer and healthier life. Similarly, they may work in food and nutrition services management, and will take part in health care teams by providing assistance and nutritional orientation to individuals or groups.

Pedagogy

Pedagogues can work in scholastic and non-scholastic settings, at several levels and modalities of education; in Children Education, with children aged 0-5 in order to contribute to their development physically, psychologically, intellectually and socially; in the earliest years of Elementary School, with children and other individuals who were not able to receive schooling at an earlier age.

Pharmacy

Pharmacists’ actions are geared towards the prevention, promotion, protection and rehabilitation of human health, as their deal with medications, clinical and toxicological analyses as well as food production and analysis. They work in pharmaceutical establishments (hospitals, community and compounding pharmacies, distributors, among others), in clinical and toxicological analysis, in pharmaceutical, cosmetics and food industries as well as in industries designed for the production of materials for in vitro diagnosis, in clinical research and in primary health care in public health teams. They may be in charge of professional inspections, health surveillance and issue technical reports; additionally, they may work as advisors or consultants independently.

Philosophy

Graduates from the Teaching Degree in Philosophy are eligible to teach in public or private Elementary, Middle and High Schools. Graduates from the Bachelor’s Degree in Philosophy are eligible to work as advisors in companies, hospitals and institutions by helping their staff understand some human life issues, especially concerning ethics.

Physical Education

Bachelors of Physical Education are eligible to work in clubs, gyms, companies, hospitals, hotels, clinics, health centers, spa hotels, public squares, community centers, condominiums, among other areas, by conducting and developing planning, coordination, orientation and supervision of physical and sports activities.

Physical Education

As teachers, Physical Education professionals are eligible to teach in public and/or private schools, with Children Education, Elementary, Middle and High Schools, in addition to conducting and developing planning, coordination, orientation and supervision of physical activities in schools.

Physics: Geophysics

The program prepares professionals to work in mining and hydrocarbon exploration companies, assessing and preventing environmental disasters, searching for water resources, and developing alternative energy sources. It also prepares its students to work in research institutes focused on the understanding of physical phenomena. Additionally, its graduates are eligible to seeking admission to graduate studies in this area.

Physics: Medical Physics

The program has been designed to produce professionals in the area of Medical Physics, for the application of principles and methods of Physics into Medicine, thus allowing for its graduates to work in health care institutions in the areas of radiology, radiation therapy, nuclear medicine, echography and nuclear magnetic resonance, among others. Additionally, its graduates are eligible to seeking admission to graduate studies in this area.

Physics: Teaching Degree

The Teaching Degree is intended to produce Physics teachers. Its curriculum has been designed to provide a strong basis in Physics, not only for teaching but also for the pursuit of graduate studies.

Physiotherapy

Physiotherapists work in public and/or private health care institutions, by providing consultancy work to companies and industries, and independently. Their work routine, which consists of making a kinetic functional diagnosis of human organs and systems, is very comprehensive, as they are eligible to work in hospitals, sports clubs (Olympic teams, soccer, volleyball, etc.), rehabilitation centers, offices, clinics (dermato functional physiotherapy, which deals with aesthetic alterations), etc. They are responsible for prescribing and employing methodologies and techniques intrinsic to Physiotherapy and work in health care teams at any level: preventive, remedial and rehabilitation; they also develop, take part and apply research for the benefit of health, the profession and the society.

Production Engineering

It falls to the Production Engineer to start projects, implement them, manage them, improve them and maintain the production system of goods and services, making use of human and material resources, technology, information and energy. Additionally, it falls to them to detail, anticipate and evaluate the performance of these systems for the benefit of society and the environment. Therefore, it will draw on the traditional methods of analysis and projects of Engineering, as well as specialized insights from Mathematics, Physics, Computing as well as Human and Social Sciences. To follow are some specific topics that will be addressed: production management, quality management, economic management, ergonomics, product development management, operations research, analysis of corporate strategy and organization, technology management, environmental management and the application of information systems to the management of productive processes.

Psychology

Psychologists are eligible to work either in public or private companies, making use of methods and techniques intended to provide psychological diagnosis and treatment, orientation and professional guidance as well as interventions based on the analysis of influence of hereditary-environmental factors and psychosocial ones on people. Similarly, they may work in psychology clinics, in health prevention and promotion centers, in educational institutions, as well as in the conduction of research and in the provision of services to the community.

Public Relations

Public Relations work in public and private organizations, communication and/or press offices, event organization and cultural production companies, parliamentary and governmental offices, conducting activities such as planning and conducting public opinion campaigns, internal communication and social responsibility. They are responsible for organizing business events and assessing the effectiveness of actions and implemented communication strategies through research.

Public Security

The purpose of the Bachelor’s degree in Public security is to produce professionals capable of working in Public and Social Security, addressing a whole set of issues related to Social Sciences and Applied Social Sciences based on a legal perspective.

Social Sciences

Graduates from the Teaching degree in Social Sciences are eligible to work as High School teachers in public and/or private schools. To follow are the attributions of the graduates from the Bachelor’s degree in Social Sciences: conduct surveys and analysis of information related to societies; design, conduct and evaluate global, regional, sectoral development plans and social projects; plan, coordinate, analyze and interpret social research; provide advisory services and consultancy to public and/or private companies, and community or non-governmental organizations.

Social Work

Social workers are capable of conducting research, analyses and interventions in social reality, in the areas of education, justice, health care, social assistance, housing, social security, labor relations, among others. They are in charge of planning, designing, implementing, executing and assessing social policies intended to expand and guarantee social rights. They are eligible to work in governmental, non-governmental and private organizations.

Software Engineering

The program is intended to produce professionals who rely on a solid background in Computing, Mathematics and software production processes, specialized in the development of applications based on information and communication technologies. Primarily focused on software solutions applied to businesses, professionals will rely on deeper insights of software architecture, development technologies and processes, in order to design robust and high-quality software in a systematic and efficient way. They will receive their training under a humanistic and fellowship-based training, according to the educational principles that guide PUCRS’ actions.

Theology

This professional will be in charge of activities related to religious and Catholic education in chapels, communities and schools and may develop research in the areas of Theology and Religion.

Tourism Management

As a manager, planner and consultant, Tourism Technologists are eligible to work in several segments of tourism: public sector agencies, air and ground transporters, travel agencies, tourism companies, hotels, restaurants, theme parks and event promoting companies, among others.
