Research structures

Cees is devoted to doing research in higher education studies with the purpose of making a scientific and technological contribution towards the innovation of contemporary society. The center coordinates and plays a very important role in innovative research projects for the scientific production in the area, which are recognized by national and international development agencies (Capes, CNPq, Inep, Fapergs, Fulbright, European Union, Udelar, among others).

In this sense, it is in close connection with the national and international academic community as it intends to work together with research networks and open its doors to visiting faculty from renowned universities, publish books and high quality journals as well as to take part in scientific events, either as organizers or presenters, among others.

Some of its members coordinate research directories accredited by CNPq, namely:

UNIVERSITAS/RIES

  • Leader: Dr Marilia Costa Morosini
  • Coordinates Higher Education studies in the areas of educational policies and practices in different academic areas. Her commitment is memorialized with the establishment of academic networks devoted to studying Education, Higher Education in Brazil and also at the Community of Portuguese Language Countries (CPLP) and at the Capes/Inep Observatory of Quality of Higher Education. She is keen to promoting the development of Brazil-USA Comparative Studies. She is recognized for her outstanding production of Higher Education encyclopedias. This directory comprises two networks: Rede Universitas (accountable to GT Politicas de Educação Superior da Anped) and Rede Sulbrasileira de Investigadores da Educação Superior.

Culture, Subjectivity and Educational Policies

  • Leader: Dr Marcos Villela Pereira
  • The group is committed to studying distinct educational policies of the present time, especially when it comes to the interference of culture and social practices on the contemporary forms of life. Relying on the contributions from the areas of Education, Psychology, Social Work and Social Sciences, it currently seeks to produce a critical analysis of the educational processes and policies, anchored in the problems associated with academic literacy, modern technologies of subjectivation and public policies, especially in Latin America. The group features researchers from PUCRS, UNLP (Argentina), UFPel, Furg, IPA, Feevale and SMED/PMPA.

Motivational Processes in Educational Contexts (Promot)

  • Leader: Dr Bettina Steren dos Santos
  • Motivation is a complex process that has a direct influence on how teachers teach and how students learn in an educational context. Its complexity can be attested in the everyday lives of teachers in educational settings. The quantitative and qualitative research investigation named A motivação na educação: abrindo fronteiras para a reflexão com oficinas de auto-conhecimento (Motivation in education: opening up for reflection with self-knowledge workshops) has found that the levels of motivation are subject to analysis and the findings are maximized by means of a qualitative method, which looks at the elements of motivation, the motivational processes in educational practices and the results of interventions through educational self-knowledge workshops. The answers provided in the questionnaires, reports and observations in field diaries, with all research subjects involved, are used as data in the investigation. For data analysis, the answers provided in the questionnaire is analyzed both in a qualitative and quantitative way (statistical data). The group features current and former graduate students from PUCRS and has strong ties with Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, with Dr. Jesus Alonso Tapia and with Universidade de Huelva, with Dr. Juan Antonio Huertas.

ARGOS – PUCRS Interdisciplinary Research Group in Distance Education

  • Distance Education is not something new. In its most traditional sense, it relied on the infrastructure of postal services to mail out materials and lessons to students afar. The asynchronous mode of study saw its beginning. With advancements in technology, especially involving the internet, a social system is based on the viability of online activities (synchronous) as access to information is facilitated, which breaks the barriers of distance and time to make communication possible. A new form of Distance Education takes hold, technologically dependent upon the evolution and consolidation of Information and Communication Technologies. A Distance Education arising from a scientific and technical civilization, immersed in the globalization of economy, in the mundialization of culture and internationalization of Education. Argos brings together the experience and expertise gained in ten years of existence, thus combining theory and practices with an eye to a complete and unabridged educational training for both undergraduate and graduate students of PUCRS. The research actions developed here look at the aspects related to faculty training and university pedagogy under the scope of the Higher Education Study Center (Cees). The role played by Argos in the Cees is crucial for the expansion of the scope of research in online education as well as innovative pedagogical practices having the cyberspace as a foundational element for teaching and learning activities.
