Representatives of several German universities discuss the significance of Luther

Center for German and European Studies PUCRS/UFRGS promoted the Reform & Modernity International Symposium

The Center for German and European Studies (CDEA – PUCRS/UFRGS) and the Consulate General of Germany in Porto Alegre held the Reform & Modernity International Symposium at PUCRS. The event relied on the support of the University’s School of Humanities, the Brazilian General Agency for Support and Evaluation of Graduate Education (CAPES), the Embassy of Germany and the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation.

The main theme was History and the present – The significance of Luther for modern Latin America. Representatives of Evangelische Kirche Deutschland, University of Tübingen, University of Münster, University of Kaiserslautern, University of Bonn, University of Erfurt and University of Kassel were among the international guest speakers.

The event also featured a cantata at PUCRS’ Cristo Mestre University Church titled A strong fortress is our God (Ein feste Burg ist unser Gott, BWV 80), written by Johann Sebastian Bach. The 80 cantata was based on a Martin Luther’s play. This music play is regarded as a hymn of the Protestant Reform, which celebrates its 500th anniversary on Oct 31, 2017. The cantata was conducted by Ronel Alberti da Rosa,  School of Humanities professor. The activity was sponsored by the Pastoral and Solidarity Center.
