PUCRS welcomes Nora Volkow, a pioneer in drug studies

2019_09_16-nora_volkowOn Oct 2, at 4 PM, PUCRS will be promoting a videoconference with the director of the US National Institute of Drug Abuse, Nora Volkow. She will be delivering a lecture at the auditorium on the ground floor of Building 50 (Av. Ipiranga, 6.681 – Porto Alegre), on Addiction as a brain disorder. No interpreting will be provided. Click here to sign up. The Mexican-American neuroscientist and psychiatrist is a pioneer in the use of tomography to investigate the effects of drugs. She has reported a number of changes in the dopamine system, which would affect the functions of the frontal brain regions involved with motivation and pleasure, among other things. She has also made contributions to the neurobiology of obesity, attention deficit disorder and hyperactivity disorder as well as aging.

Nora Volkow will deliver the lecture after an invitation made by School of Medicine’s and the Brain Institute of Rio Grande do Sul’s Professor Rodrigo Grassi de Oliveira. Over the past 30 years, Nora Volkow has published more than 770 peer-reviewed articles and 95 book chapters. She has also served as an editor of four books on brain imaging and drug addiction, and co-edited an encyclopedia on Neuroscience. She has received several awards, including one from the National Academy of Medicine in 2000, and the International Science Award from the French Institute of Health and Medical Research in 2009. She was named one of Time Magazine’s “Top 100 People Who Shape Our World” in 2007.
