Times Higher Education - World University RankingsPUCRS ranked 2nd in the Times Higher Education (THE) Emerging Economies University Rankings 2018 in a list that includes the best private universities in Brazil and other emerging economies. The university is also in the top position among the universities in the South of Brazil. PUCRS stood out in the areas Industry Income, International Outlook and Citations.

The ranking features 378 educational institutions from 42 countries. Brazil is the third nation with the largest number of institutions: 32. Overall, 50 countries were listed as emerging economies (advanced or secondary ones) or “frontier markets” by FTSE, an company specialized in the calculation of international indexes and data services. However, institutions from only 42 of these countries have made it to the Top 378. The universities’ involvement with industries and their international perspectives have a heavier weight.

Indicators and method

The ranking uses the same 13 indicators that are used by THE World University Rankings, as it looks at the strengths of each university in relation to all of their activities: teaching, research, citations, knowledge transfer and international perspectives. Funnily enough, the methodology was revisited to enable a better reflection of the characteristics and priorities of development of universities in emerging economies.

The Times Higher Education is one of the most important international rankings and is mainly intended to show the impact of research carried out in the institutions in terms of database citations.
