The School of Communications, Arts and Design (Famecos) professor, Dr André Pase joined a mission at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), in Cambridge, USA in May. He is working on the cooperation project Technology and Society in a globalized world in crisis, coordinated by Prof. Ingo Wolfgang Sarlet, under the priority theme World in Motion: Individuals and Society.

The mission had two main goals: to present a paper in the event Media in Transition 10, entitled Whatsapp as a backchannel for the Brazilian city and to meet with MIT partner labs, especially with Comparative Media Studies/Writing. “These meetings were important to set forth the appointment of Professor William Uricchio to PUCRS next year. They also helped us adjust our project and help him in his research”, Pase comments. In his view, mappings and discussions foster an understanding of how current technologies are related – and also shape – urban spaces.

Partnership between PUCRS and MIT

In Pase’s understanding, MIT and PUCRS cooperate in two different areas. Researchers from both institutions are in common contact. “Professor Uricchio has already delivered seminar in Porto Alegre, resulting from the partnership celebrated in 2011 between the two institutions. That same year I was a visiting professor in Cambridge”, he says. Two researchers from his research group at FAMECOS have already completed post-doctoral research at MIT, which consolidated the connections between the two institutions.

“Once again, PUCRS plays a leading role in research and scientific knowledge production in important partnerships such as this and in the valuing of human relations that make the University a reference”, Pase adds.
