Zeferino Brazil

(Taquari, RS, 1870; Porto Alegre, RS, 1942).

Teacher, journalist, poet, playwright, novelist and a chronicler who wrote for various newspapers under pseudonyms. In 1920 Z. Brazil refused an invitation to join the Brazilian Academy of Letters. Due to his great popularity he was known as "Prince of the Poets of Rio Grande do Sul." At the end of the 19th century he belonged to two literary societies: Apeles Porto Alegre and Castro Alves, both in Porto Alegre. His most relevant works are: Juca, o letrado: estudo da psicologia mórbida, 1900, Vovó Musa, 1903, O meio: psicofisiologia do alcoolismo, 1922, Alma gaúcha, 1935.
